The American Quilter's Society, headquartered in Paducah, KY, presents the first AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Grand Rapids, MI, August 22 - 25, 2012 in the DeVos Place Convention Center. Over 15,000 quilt lovers will converge upon the downtown area to enjoy the largest quilt show in Michigan. More than 900 quilts will be on display, including multiple international exhibitions.
Similar to ArtPrize in the Grand Rapids area, the AQS Quilt Show & Contest celebrates the art of quiltmaking. Although commonly associated with warmth, dedicated quilters create stunning works that are respected as museum-quality artistry. Today's quilters create intricate designs expressing emotional power and aesthetic innovation.
AQS Marketing Director, Tim Langlitz says, "Like Renaissance masterpieces, these works of art are saturated with passion and precision. If Da Vinci could sew, he'd make one of these." Grand Rapids General Television PR
Frank Bennett, Executive Director of the National Quilt Museum notes, "When people see pictures of these quilts, they can't tell the difference between them and a fine painting."
The high point of the show recognizes the artistry of today's quiltmakers, as over 350 quilters in the AQS Quilt Contest are competing for more than $44,000 in cash awards. Entries in this international contest and exhibition come from 40 states and 6 other countries.
The American Quilter's Society is bringing several special exhibitions to the first AQS Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. International Exhibitions include "Stitch Like An Egyptian: Tentmakers of Cairo" and "Japanese Color and Form: New Works by Fifty Japanese Artists." Also included are "Alzheimer's Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope" organized by Ami Simms and "Home is Where the Quilt Is" from the Alliance for American Quilts. The National Quilt Museum is also providing two exhibits for display. Highlights of the work of Gwen Marston and Mary Buvia, both renowned authors, round out the experience.
Admission to the AQS Quilt Show & Contest includes access to all special exhibitions and the Merchant Mall with over 300 exhibitor booths.
Hours are Wednesday, August 22 through Friday, August 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, August 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
