I love hearing live music outdoors in the summer. There is something magical about enjoying music under a cloudless or even star filled sky. And it is really the perfect date night, girls night out or even an event for the whole family to enjoy. Here are a few ways to enjoy outdoor music this summer in Grand Rapids in nearly every genre of music:
- Blues on the Mall: Every Wednesday through August 8th, enjoy a free live blues concert in Rosa Parks Circle downtown. Sponsored by the local radio station WLAV, Budweiser and The Gun Lake Casino, the shows start at 6:30 and always bring out an eclectic crowd. Did I mention free? Here is the lineup for the rest of the summer.
- Picnic Pops: The slopes of Canonsburg turn into the perfect venue to enjoy tributes to all your favorite bands put on by the Grand Rapids Symphony. Not only that, but you are welcome to bring food and drink and enjoy them with your family and friends while you listen. This season enjoy tributes to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, John Denver and a live performance from Kansas themselves. Schedule and ticketing information can be found at the Grand Rapids Symphony website.
- Frederick Meijer Garden Summer Concert Series: This annual series brings in some of the best entertainers around. Running June through August these concerts often sell out (sometimes before they even go on sale to the public, so become a member to get early access). You bring your seating and food, and they supply the drink (for a cost of course). You can also purchase food at their concessions. Concerts begin at 7 pm and gates open an hour before hand. Get a schedule of the remaining concerts at the Meijer Garden website.
- GRandJazzFest: Another free music event for Grand Rapids to enjoy. From noon until 10pm on Saturday Aug. 18th, head down to Rosa Parks circle to enjoy live music from the best of the Grand Rapids jazz scene. You can catch some of your long time favorites or hear some new up and comers all in the heart of the city. The schedule can be found on the JazzFest website.
