How does public art transform urban spaces, and how do artists encourage public interaction with a work of art? This guided tour will cover a group of public projects in downtown Grand Rapids, from Ah-Nab-Awen Park to Calder Plaza. We will discuss the impact of temporary versus permanent public sculpture, and the recent history of memorable ArtPrize installations. This select group of sculpture ranges in media and will be a starting point to learn about how technology, building materials, scale, and human interaction can be effective or ineffective in public art. Students will have the chance to brainstorm their own ideas for a public artwork on the sites we visit.
