Iris van Herpen: Inspired by History, Borrowing from the Past

Though her exquisite garments are fabricated using breakthrough 21st Century technology, Iris van Herpen has clearly been influenced by the long, exciting history of fashion. Like her mentor Alexander McQueen, van Herpen displays a profound knowledge of and respect for the past, and this presentation will outline some of the ways her designs have been inspired by a rich, international sartorial history, from Japanese samurai armor and Elizabethan underwear to 19th and 20th Century haute couture.

Suzanne Eberle is a professor of Art History at Kendall College of Art & Design, where she is chair of that program and has taught since 1979. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Detroit, and her areas of specialization include Modern and Contemporary Art, with an emphasis on issues related to the presentation of the body in art, including the history of fashion.
