NEW! Guest Artist Workshop: Renee Zettle-Sterling (The Sentimental Jewel: Brooching the Subject)

Jewelry has the potential to be more than something a person wears for show, it can also be ripe with sentimental expression and personal significance for the wearer. It can range from jewelry given for love to jewelry that is created from materials that are in themselves meaningful. Have you ever wondered what to do with that notable family heirloom, or a loved one’s special piece of clothing? Learn to use fiber techniques such as basic hand sewing, embroidery, and beading, as well as working with simple one-part silicone molds and casting paper pulp to transform your sentimental and profound objects into beautiful brooches. Basic jewelry techniques such as cold connections and soldering will also be introduced. Expect to come away with a deeper sense of the sentimental in jewelry, a gorgeous brooch (or two or three), enhanced creative potential, and new technical skills.

Renée Zettle-Sterling received her MFA in Sculpture/Installation in 1997, a MA in Metals/Jewelry in 1998 from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and a BFA in Papermaking/Fibers in 1993 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Zettle-Sterling is a Professor of Art and Design at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. She has taught workshops, exhibited, and lectured on her work nationally and internationally. She has an active studio practice, which consists of exploring a multiplicity of media and technique to create small-scale body orientated devices, jewelry, and installations. Additionally, her work has been featured in over a dozen publications, such as 21st Century Jewelry: The Best of the 500 Series, 1000 Rings: Inspiring Adornment for the Hand, 500 Metal Vessels, Art Jewelry Today 4, as well as Metalsmith magazine and American Craft magazine.
