When Image is Everything: The Vice of Vainglory, Character Formation, and YOU

Did you know that the vice of "vainglory" was on the original list of seven deadly sins? What is it and why did it drop off the list? Are you "notorious vainglorious"? Using the desert fathers and your favorite Disney characters, we'll explore vainglory's various contemporary forms, discover its roots in pride and fear with Augustine and Aquinas, and experiment with spiritual practices that form our character in virtuous ways.($10.00 donation requested.)

Rebecca DeYoung, PhD (University of Notre Dame) has taught philosophy at Calvin College for the past 18 years. She specializes in ethics and the history of philosophy, and her research focuses on the seven capital vices and moral formation. Her books include Glittering Vices: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins and Their Remedies (Brazos 2009), and Vainglory: The Forgotten Vice (Eerdmans 2014). She speaks widely, including recent visits to Capitol Hill, a Cistercian abbey, colleges and universities, and a maximum security correctional facility in Louisiana. She and her husband live in Grandville, Michigan, with their four children.
