Grand Rapids turns 175 years old in 2025 – and the City is inviting you to join in the celebration. The City of Grand Rapids was incorporated on April 2, 1850, and then officially established one month later. Of course, a dodransbicentennial – the term for a 175th anniversary – merits more than a single day’s observance, so the City is gearing up for a year-long celebration of all things Grand Rapids. It plans to commemorate and share our storied history, vibrant present and inspired future in ways that engage and excite the entire community.

A Sneak Peek

EXGR is partnering with the city to get the word out about anniversary events and activities. Many details are still being finalized, but the 175GR celebration will include:

  • A giant birthday party on June 7th at Rosa Parks Circle – all are invited!
  • A mobile museum exhibit – 175 Pictures for 175 Years – that will travel throughout the city and be a focal point at many events.
  • Digital collaborations and contests designed for mass participation.

You’re Invited to Participate

The City also wants to involve local businesses, organizations and community leaders in this effort. It has created a special 175th Anniversary logo and is encouraging anyone and everyone to use it promote the celebration in a positive light, consistent with brand guidelines. The logo is licensed under Creative Commons and is FREE to use in any of these formats.

Add the logo to your website. Put it on a banner at your workplace. Incorporate it into apparel, accessories and other merchandise. Print it on an invitation for hosting a 175th-anniversary party of your own. Your imagination – and the city’s brand guidelines – are the only limits.

The City and EXGR believe the 175th Anniversary can foster community pride and further enhance Grand Rapids’ already-sterling reputation as a great place, to live, work and visit. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to join in the fun.
