Award Winning History Detectives Program Explores Unique Stories from Grand Rapids’ Past


GRAND RAPIDS (January 17, 2017) The Grand Rapids Public Library has partnered with seven local historical agencies to present the day-long History Detectives program. The program, in its 10th year, runs from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Main Library – 111 Library St NE and is free and open to the public. Sessions topics include:

  • Present, But Not Counted: Dutch Immigrant Midwives in Grand Rapids
  • Selling Grand Rapids: Expositions in the Furniture City, 1878-1965
  • Making Waves: Michigan's Boat Building Industry, 1865-2000
  • Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Rediscovering Emma Cole's 19th-Century Grand Rapids Flora
  • A Modern Vision Realized: The Mid-Century Park School Development Program
  • Reflections on the Gi-Gikinomaage-min (We are all Teachers) Project

Each session will last 45 minutes and will be presented by a local author or historian.

Partnering organizations for the day include the Grand Rapids Historical Society, the Grand Rapids Historical Commission, the Western Michigan Genealogical Society, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the Kutsche Office of Local History at GVSU, the Grand Rapids City Archives, and the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council. A box lunch is available for $10 and must be ordered in advance by calling 988-5492 or by emailing rsvp@grpl.org.

History Detectives will be held from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 28 in the Ryerson Auditorium at the Grand Rapids Public Library, 111 Library St. NE. The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. An overflow room will be available with a simulcast video presentation.
