"Thank God for Michigan!" President Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said at the beginning of the Civil War, when Michigan Governor Austin Blair responded quickly to a call for volunteer soldiers - and went above and beyond by securing a loan from the city of Detroit to outfit those soldiers with supplies and provisions.

Michigan continued to have a deep and far-reaching impact on the outcome of the Civil War, richly detailed in the Thank God for Michigan! exhibit currently running at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

The interactive exhibit displays artifacts like uniforms, weapons, letters and photography; and tells the stories of the Michigan personalities involved in this historic conflict.

The exhibit runs through September 1, 2012 and is available during the Museum's regular hours: Tuesday 9 - 8 and Wednesday - Saturday, 9 - 5. Admission $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $3 for children ages 3 - 17. For directions and further information, check out the Grand Rapids Public Museum online.
