Grand Rapids’ mayors have always called upon us to be better citizens, and in keeping with this tradition of civic engagement is Mayor Bliss’ annual Greening Initiative, which is produced each year in partnership with our Mayor’s Office, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and the City’s Forestry Department.

  • Friday event: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
  • Saturday event 9:30 AM

Community Impact
Volunteering: In 2019, Friends inspired over 1 ,000 volunteers to complete over 2,500 volunteer hours in our city.
Activation: Friends activates 76 city parks through cleanup events, movies in the neighborhood parks, tree plantings, and tiny library builds.
Fundraising: Friends raises funds for special projects that go above and beyond millage dollars.

  • 100 container trees provided to GR residents through a community tree giveaway ( April 24th )
  • 400 saplings given to area students at the mayor's sapling assembly
  • 500 trees planted in the garfield park neighborhood at the (April 25th) project day
