About Face

View Map

About Face examines the representation of African Americans through portraiture. Featuring new works by Larry W. Cook and Charles Edward Williams that are juxtaposed with selections from David Levinthal’s iconic Blackface series (1995-1998), About Face pointedly remarks on the ways in which our understanding of contemporary African American portraiture is affected by both historic and contemporary racist iconography. These works respond to issues of race and racism, identity, and myths of cultural and racial homogeneity.
