Art of the People: Contemporary Anishinaabe Artists features artworks by nationally recognized and early career Native American artists. The men and women who bring their work to our communities combine their respect of cultural traditions with contemporary sensitivities and themes.

Through sculpture, paintings, ceramics, beadwork and mixed media — abstract and representational — these artists express their experiences in both traditional and nontraditional media, techniques, and subject matter.

Craft, history, identity, social justice, and popular culture are explored. By celebrating their past, these artists define who they are today. Their knowledge of craft and design was passed down to each new generation, which in turn adapted and innovated to their own circumstances and resources.

Art of the People is an opportunity to explore the different points of view and discover the traditions that inspire these artists. An awareness, understanding and respect of Anishinaabe culture is one step closer for all to become one with the land and the people who live here now and before anyone else.

This exhibition is part of the Saugatuck Douglas Fennville Arts Initiative, a collective dedicated to bringing high quality art exhibits and installations at no cost. Visit www.sdfai.org for more information
