Calvin Theatre Company presents Nicholas Nickleby

Nicholas Nickleby
By Charles Dickens, Adapted by Jonathan Holloway

Michael Page returns to the Calvin Theatre Company to direct an adaptation of one of Charles Dickens’ most popular books, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. As with a great many of Dicken’s novels, the play features a social ill that desperately needs remedying. The depiction of Dotheboy Hall run by its brutal headmaster Wackford Squeers is as moving as the portrayal of the poor house in Oliver Twist. Looming over nearly all the characters and manipulating their lives is Ralph Nickleby, Nicholas’ uncle, who embodies the viciousness and moral bankruptcy of unrestrained greed. But all is not grimness and gloom in the play; Nicholas’ adventures take him to all kinds of colorful places inhabited by outlandish people including the hero’s stint with a traveling theatre company.
Our production will feature several actors playing multiple parts, original music, and a style based loosely on German expressionism. It promises to be visually stunning and memorable.
