Perky, plus-sized teen Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to star on The Corny Collins Show, Baltimore’s local song-and-dance television program featuring the “nicest kids in town" with the coolest dance moves. When Tracy wows Corny with her blues-inspired moves (picked up from her black student after-school detention mates), she is given the chance to step into the spotlight. However, Tracy faces opposition from the cast and crew: she doesn’t fit the prim and proper beauty queen mold, and her boldly stated beliefs for black and white integration certainly don’t mesh with the status quo: it’s 1962, and segregation is the name of the game. Hairspray explores ideas and prejudices surrounding body image, gender, class, and race—it’s a story set against the backdrop of an America that, at times, feels strikingly similar to today. As the story unfolds, remember: You can’t stop the beat!

It's Calvin Theatre Company's 85th anniversary season and we are privileged to welcome you to our Create, Unite, Renew year of the arts! In 2018-19, we're exploring themes of gender, race, and reconciliation. We're glad for you to join in the storytelling and the conversation.
