Marcelo Lehninger, conductor
Sônia Goulart, piano
• RAVEL: Mother Goose Suite
• CHOPIN: Concerto No. 2 for Piano
• BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2

Marcelo Lehninger’s mother, pianist Sonia Goulart, joins her son to celebrate Mother’s Day on May 12 and the conclusion of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s 2018-19 season. One of the most prominent Brazilian artists of the past 30 years, Goulart is winner of more than 30 national and international awards including the International Ferrucio Busoni Prize in Bolzano, Italy. She makes her Grand Rapids debut performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor, an idiomatic and highly personal work, which only could have been composed by one of the greatest pianists of all time. Chopin nonetheless wrote and premiered the work just days after his 20th birthday. Johannes Brahms spent nearly 20 years in a soul-searching struggle to compose his First Symphony. With that behind him, the great German Romantic composer dashed his Symphony No. 2 while on a summer vacation. A friend who was among the first to hear it before its premiere told Brahms, “It is all rippling streams, blue sky, sunshine and cool green shadows.” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, in DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW. Tickets start at $18 adults, $5 students.
