Grand Rapids Symphony's Scheherazade

October 5-6
Marcelo Lehninger, conductor
Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano
• WEBER: Overture to Abu Hassan
• KHACHATURIAN: Concerto for Piano
• RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade

In the legendary tale of “The Arabian Nights,” Scheherazade mesmerizes the Sultan each night with a new story for 1,001 nights in a row, eventually causing the Sultan to fall in love and marry her. Meanwhile, for nearly 130 years, audiences have regularly fallen in love with Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling musical portrayal of Scheherazade. You’ll be mesmerized as well by legendary French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who has more than 50 recordings to his credit, performing Aram Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto. The Armenian folk-flavored, crowd-pleasing showpiece pits soloist vs. orchestra in an epic musical battle. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6, in DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW. Tickets start at $18 adults, $5 students.
