Grand Rapids Symphony’s Verdi Requiem
Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, famous for operas such as Aida, was spiritual but not a regular churchgoer. Yet he poured out his most mature vocal and dramatic gifts into his Requiem, sometimes described as “Aida in church.” In fact for the premiere of his Mass for the Dead, Verdi engaged two of the four singers from the original cast of Aida. From the supplications of the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei to the sheer terror of the Dies Irae or “Day of Judgment,” Verdi creates a Sistine Chapel in music.
Grand Rapids Symphony Music Director Marcelo Lehninger conducts the third concerts in the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical series at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, November 17-18, in DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW.
Upbeat, a pre-concert conversation begins at 7 p.m.
$18 general admission, $5 students
