The Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys will once again offer its much-loved presentation of the Passion of Christ on Thursday and Friday March 28 & 29, 2019.
This sacred concert begins at the cradle in Bethlehem where we left off this past December with Lesson & Carols. After pausing to reflect on the depth of what ‘being forgiven’ means (Allegri’s Miserere) the choir will walk alongside Christ as He stands trial, embraces the cross, and finally steps out of the empty tomb. The choir will perform new anthems composed by James Whitbourn and Philip Stopford as well as portions of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion glorious Requiems of Herbert Howells and W.A. Mozart. John Ireland & Patrick Hadley, quintessential British composers for which the choir is so well known, will also be represented.
GRCMB’s Lenten concert will be made more special this year by the residency this coming March of Andrew Nethsingha, Director of Music of the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Andrew is truly one of the most exacting and inspiring choir trainers in the world today.
Andrew Nethsingha was a chorister at Exeter Cathedral, under his father’s direction. He later studied at the Royal College of Music, where he won seven prizes, and at St John’s College, Cambridge. He held Organ Scholarships under Christopher Robinson at St George’s Windsor, and George Guest at St John’s, before becoming Assistant Organist at Wells Cathedral where our Director of Music, Scott Bosscher, sang daily in the choir for Andrew for three years. Mr. Nethsingha was subsequently Director of Music at Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals, and Artistic Director of the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival.
Besides here in Grand Rapids, concert venues this season where Mr. Nethsingha will direct include Royal Albert Hall & Royal Festival Hall London, Konzerthaus Berlin, Müpa Budapest, Royal Concertgebauw Holland, Singapore Esplanade, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Hong Kong City Hall.
You do not want to miss his concerts here with the Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys.
