NIA Centre will host a Virtual Connect Event on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. Barbara Welch, Treasurer, NIA Centre will interview special guest, Antonia Henry, MD, MPH regarding Colon Cancer and its impact upon the African American Community. Dr. Henry is a Colorectal Surgeon and Associate Chief Clinical Officer at Metro Health – University of Michigan. A Michigan native, she was born in Detroit and raised in Grand Rapids, graduating from City High School as valedictorian. She holds a BS with distinction in Microbiology from the University of Michigan where she was a Rhodes Scholarship Finalist and Angell Scholar. After college she was awarded the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and earned her MD degree at Harvard Medical School. She completed residency in General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she also published research on health care disparities and completed an MPH degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. Following residency, she served as the Ship’s Surgeon on the USS Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier, before returning to Boston for fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and is board certified in both specialties.
While in the US Navy, she was a Staff Surgeon at Naval Medical Center San Diego and Medical Director of the Combined Endoscopy Center. She was deployed to Afghanistan where she served as Director of Surgical Services at the NATO Multinational Medical Unit on Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan before being promoted to Commander. NIA Centre’s Virtual Connect Event will be video conferenced live via ZOOM and broadcast on Facebook Live.
NIA Centre’s Virtual and Physical Connect Events are designed to connect leaders and the companies/organizations they represent to the African American community. Virtual and Physical Connect Events provide a way for area leaders and their companies to reach the African American community and people from other racial and ethnic groups. As a result, those that attend a Virtual or Physical CONNECT event will be able to discover how they can CONNECT with special guest(s) and/or business(es)/organization(s) they represent. Also, attendees will be able to establish great connections with one another.
NIA Centre is a non-profit 501- (C)(3) organization that is leading a major effort to place an African American Cultural Center in Grand Rapids, MI. Its mission is to provide an inclusive gathering space created to inspire, build, transform, and connect, all people, of all ages. NIA Centre focuses on providing events and programming in the following six focus areas that include: Arts and Entertainment, Diversity, Inclusion, and Racial Equity, Education, Entrepreneurship and Wealth Building, Health Care, and Research.
