REENA ESMAIL Sitar Concerto
DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 7
Tianyu Li Conductor | Gaurav Mazumdar Sitar
“East meets West with artists and music that spans the globe”
The shimmering, glimmering sound of the sitar was popularized in the 1960s by such solo artists as Ravi Shankar as well as by The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who used the multi-stringed instrument from India on several recordings. Sitarist Gaurav Mazumdar, a student of Shankar’s, is soloist in the Sitar Concerto of Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, led by Tianyu Lu, a Chinese-born conductor from New Zealand who also will lead Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7.
"Gaurav has become one of the most versatile and exciting musicians of his generation" – Brighton Festival, U.K.
