Coming from Asheville, North Carolina, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Joseph Herbst is paving his way as an avid composer and arranger in the jazz world, combining his years of classical saxophone studies under internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Joe Lulloff, with his active involvement in traditional and modern jazz. Joseph studied composition and arranging under Etienne Charles and Diego Rivera while at Michigan State University and has had his arrangements performed by musicians such as Rodney Whitaker, Mark Whitfield, and Harvey Mason, as well as commissions by Rodney Whitaker for the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra.
The Joseph Herbst Sextet features fellow students and alumni of Michigan State - Evan Taylor on trumpet, Peter Martin on guitar, Luther Allison on piano, Zach McKinney on drums, and Liany Mateo on bass. Collectively, members of the band of performed and toured with artists such as Rodney Whitaker, Etienne Charles, and Michael Dease. They have worked as clinicians at camps across the country, and performed at notable venues such as Smalls Jazz Club in New York City, among many other accomplishments. The sextet is part of Herbst’s project entitled “This is Our Environment,” which brings together original music, spoken word artists, and environmental justice in order to challenge our understanding of the environment and society to push us towards a more just and equitable society founded on a sense of community.
