Trees give us shade, clean the air, lower energy costs, slow traffic, and provide beautiful streets. The Burton Heights neighborhood has historically had a fewer healthy trees than others, but we are working to change that!
With Mayor Bliss, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, the City Forestry Department, and area residents, we'll be planting 300 trees throughout the year.
On May 1, we'll have a Mini-Planting: in celebration of Arbor Day! VOLUNTEER WITH US to plant 25 new trees in Plaster Creek Park & 25 along surrounding streets.
Never planted a tree before? No problem! Our team will give you step by step instructions on how to plant a tree as well as provide all the tools and equipment you will need. There will always be a tree expert in the area who will be able to answer any questions.
Other Events of the Mayor's Greening Initiative:
- May 8, Tree Giveaway: We're giving away free trees for neighbors! Request one to plant in your yard.
- Oct. 8-9, Neighborhood-Wide Tree Planting: Volunteer for a 2-hour shift and help add 250 new trees to the neighborhood! Trees will be planted in open spaces between the sidewalk and road (don't worry - they won't interfere with power lines, driveways or walkways!).
