Butchering demonstration and live music at the Local First Fork Fest
The community event returns for its 6th year to connect West Michigan with its local food heroes

Grand Rapids, MI – Local First will host the 6th annual Fork Fest, presented by Brewery Vivant, on October 20 from 5–9:00 pm. This event will feature live music, a butchering demonstration and dozens of local food and beverage producers, growers, and restauranteurs.

Fork Fest is open to the public, and with hundreds of people in attendance last year, Local First is expecting a big crowd. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect directly with food entrepreneurs and learn about ways to shift their dollars to local sources.

“Food is such a communal thing; it’s something that naturally brings people together.” says Elissa Hillary, Executive Director of Local First. “Fork Fest expands on this bond. It builds our connection to place, contributes to the uniqueness of our community, gives people the opportunity to see our agricultural abundance, and makes it easy to support local food entrepreneurs.”

All food samples, non-alcoholic beverages and entertainment are included in admission. Adult beverages will be available for purchase including Brewery Vivant’s Pumpkin Tart and other favorites. Fenn Valley and Vander Mill Cider will offer wine and hard cider.

New to this year’s celebration, Louise Earl Butcher will provide a butchering demonstration. Louise Earl Butcher sources all of its meats from farms as local as possible and visits these farms to verity their practices.  Owner Matt Smith hopes that this demonstration will give guests the opportunity to make the connection between where there food comes from and how it gets to their table.

“Food comes from somewhere, food doesn’t come from a styrofoam container wrapped in plastic wrap,” Smith says. “We want to engage people in a conversation so they can better understand what goes into providing a good source of food to the general public.”

Live music provided by local bluegrass favorite Faugrass. The band returns for its sixth Fork Fest.
