All Kent County restaurants, attractions, hotels and other service businesses are currently allowed to operate without COVID-related restrictions. However, on August 18, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the risk level of COVID-19 infection to high in Kent County.
The CDC encourages everyone in areas with a risk designation of substantial or high to wear a face mask in indoor public places, regardless of vaccination status.
While this is not a mandate, individual businesses are empowered to set their own mask (and other safety-related) guidelines for customers and employees. Please check individual websites to confirm any requirements before you visit. Rest assured that the enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols implemented during the pandemic continue to be the norm.
We thank all the residents and visitors who helped support our local tourism and hospitality industries since the pandemic began – and we look forward to welcoming you back for more Grand Times!
The Gerald R. Ford International Airport continues to require face masks inside its facility as required by federal law. The airport has been at the forefront of COVID-19 safety from the beginning of the pandemic. It is the first airport in Michigan to earn the Global Biorisk Advisory Council™ STAR® Facility Accreditation status from the ISSA -- the worldwide cleaning industry association.
In addition to being the "gold standard" for cleaning and sanitation, the airport introduced a Fly Safe. Fly Ford. campaign in 2020 to educate travelers on new precautions for their health and restore confidence in air travel. New safety features at the airport include continuous cleaning protocols, hand sanitizer stations, plexiglass dividers at interaction points, visual cues to reinforce physical distancing, and PPE available in concession areas and through vending machines. Passengers, guests and airport personnel are asked to wear facial coverings throughout the terminal.
The Ford airport also offers COVID-19 testing in the Economy Lot, in partnership with TACKL Health. No appointments are needed and drive-up testing options include: Rapid Molecular PCR tests (results in 30 minutes), Standard Molecular PCR Tests (results in 24-72 hours) and Rapid antigen and antibody tests (results in 15 minutes). The site is open from Monday-Friday 4am-8pm and Saturday-Sunday 6am-6pm. You do not need to have COVID-19 symptoms or a doctor’s referral to be tested.
Restaurants, breweries, distilleries, cideries, coffeehouses and other food & drink establishments can now operate without restrictions. Some are still working through pandemic-related staffing issues, so please be patient as they ramp up their service. Many establishments continue to offer the robust outdoor dining and carryout/delivery options they developed during the pandemic.
Most major attractions are open in Grand Rapids and Kent County. Some, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, now require all visitors 2+ and older to wear masks. Performing arts companies and live-music venues are presenting shows indoors and out, and masking and vaccination requirements may vary by artist and location. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum is currently closed.
Please check attraction websites in advance of your visit to confirm safety requirements.
MDHHS orders remain in effect for nursing homes, prisons, hospital, school, agricultural workers and other sectors that do not generally impact visitors.
The health and safety of visitors and residents remains a paramount concern. We continue to track state and federal COVID-19 updates and consult with businesses to keep them informed.
