Grand Rapids Travel Updates & Openings

Updated: 8/15/2022

Travel to Grand Rapids has rebounded to levels not seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Experience Grand Rapids and its industry partners are grateful for the opportunity to welcome an ever-increasing number of business and leisure travelers yet mindful that the virus remains a concern for many.

On August 11, 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its COVID-19 guidance to relax distancing, testing and quarantining recommendations. Here’s how the latest guidelines have been implemented in Grand Rapids and Kent County.

FAQ

Grand Rapids Travel Updates:

Are any travel restrictions in effect in Kent County?

No. Visitors and residents can travel freely throughout Grand Rapids and Kent County.

Are masks required in Grand Rapids?

No. People may choose to wear a mask anytime, but virtually all mask mandates have ended – including on public transport. Masks do not have to be worn at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Airport or when using the Rapid bus system.

One exception is that masks continue to be required in health care settings. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is also expected to wear a mask when around other people.

Individual businesses may still insist that customers wear masks – though we’re unaware of any that do – and meeting organizers are free to set their own masking guidelines. Experience Grand Rapids will work with you to craft a plan that addresses any health and safety concerns for your event.

Are any businesses still closed due to COVID-19?

No. Some businesses continue to deal with COVID-related staffing challenges, but all business are permitted to open.

Is social distancing required in Kent County?

No. The CDC no longer recommends staying at least 6 feet away from others to reduce the risk of exposure, and Kent County follows suit – though many local businesses still have tools in place to help maintain social distance if that’s your preference.

Is anything being done to lower the odds of COVID transmission for meeting attendees?

Yes. Many businesses continue to employ elevated cleaning and sanitation protocols. For example:

  • The Gerald R. Ford International Airport continues to implement the disinfection and sanitation protocols that helped it earn a 2021 Airport Service Quality Award from Airports Council International. It is one of just 46 airports around the world to earn this distinction, and it was specifically honored in the category of Best Hygiene. The airport has also upgraded its HVAC systems to enhance air ventilation and filtration, and it offers drive-thru COVID-19 testing in one of its parking lots.
  • DeVos Place Convention Center has also upgraded its HVAC air filtration system, installing bipolar ionization equipment – which proactively purifies indoor air at the source of contamination – as well as enhanced filters with optimal MERV ratings to provide maximum air purification.
  • Van Andel Arena, the region’s largest group gathering space, has installed the same bipolar ionization equipment and enhanced filters while conducting additional sanitizing of high-volume areas, and reducing touch points for attendees and staff.

The health and safety of visitors and residents remains a paramount concern. We continue to track state and federal COVID-19 updates and consult with businesses to keep them informed. Visit the Kent County Health Department website for additional COVID-19 information and resources, including a list of testing locations.
