Spanning 70 square blocks north-south from Fulton St. to Franklin St. and east-west from Plymouth Ave. to Fuller Ave., Eastown began as a streetcar commuter suburb due to its location between downtown Grand Rapids and Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids, which was the site of a popular amusement park from 1897-1955. It evolved into a distinct neighborhood that became increasingly quirky and progressive through the years, sometimes referred to as the “Greenwich Village of Grand Rapids.”
Today, Eastown is a vibrant, walkable and welcoming district filled with more than 130 businesses and 4,500+ residents. While it has its own identity (and community association), Eastown is part of Uptown Grand Rapids along with adjacent neighborhoods East Fulton, East Hills and Wealthy Street. All four districts contain some of the city’s most unique shops and restaurants along with busy sidewalks, bustling outdoor cafes and historic homes on tree-lined streets.
Many Eastown businesses are situated along Lake Dr. and around the intersection of Lake and Wealthy St. On-street parking in commercial areas are generally pay-to-park from 8am-7pm Monday-Friday. A few businesses have their own parking lots and there are three city-owned parking lots (at 354 Hampton Ave. SE, 1482 Lake Dr. SE and 420 East Ethel Ave. SE). If you prefer not to drive, The Rapid Bus #6 travels along Lake Dr. on its way from downtown to Woodland Mall, with numerous stops in Eastown.
