Roadwork Updates and Road Closures

Grand Rapids is easy to get around in-even when roadwork is in progress. Check these links to view all current area roadwork so you can avoid temporary traffic disruptions and plan a quick, convenient alternate route:

Current Projects

Downtown GR

The intersection of Fulton Street and Division Avenue is closed from July 15 through early November.

Westbound drivers should exit Fulton Street at Ransom Avenue and head north (right) to Lyon Street, west to Ottawa Avenue and south to Fulton.

Eastbound drivers should head north (left) on Ionia Avenue to Fountain Street, then east to Ransom and south on Ransom back to Fulton.

Northbound/southbound drivers should use Ionia Avenue to cross Fulton Street.

Construction has closed the Lyon Street entrance to the DeVos Place parking garage. The garage is still accessible from eastbound Michigan Street.

Airport Roads

The Patterson Avenue-36th Street intersection in Kentwood will be closed starting in mid-September, which may impact travel to and from the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Drivers are advised to use 44th Street to access the airport.

Highway Construction

US-131 &I-96

The left lane of northbound US-131 from Ann Street (just outside downtown) to I-196 is closed through September 30.

The northbound US-131 ramp to I-96 (about four miles north of downtown) will be closed through September 30. The detour route is northbound US-131 to southbound West River Drive to southbound US-131.

The northbound/southbound M-37 (Alpine Avenue) ramp onto eastbound I-96 is closed for construction through September 30.

  • Northbound Alpine Avenue traffic will utilize westbound 3 Mile Road, northbound Walker Avenue and eastbound I-96.
  • Southbound Alpine Avenue traffic will utilize westbound I-96, southbound Walker Avenue and eastbound I-96.

M-6 and I-96

The M-6/I96 interchange in Cascade Township (southeast of downtown Grand Rapids) is being rebuilt this summer. As a result, the eastbound and westbound ramps to westbound M-6 are closed through November 9.

  • Eastbound I-96 traffic will use Exit 43A, westbound M-11/28th St to southbound M-37 to westbound M-6.
  • Westbound I-96 traffic will take westbound I-96 to westbound M-11/28th St to southbound M-37 to westbound M-6.

M-6 and US-131

The northbound and eastbound M-6 ramps to northbound US-131 (south of downtown) are closed from September 3 through Oct. 8.

  • Detour for the northbound ramp: northbound US-131 to westbound 54th Street to southbound US-131.
  • Detour for the eastbound ramp: eastbound M-6 exit ramp to 68th Street, eastbound 68th Street to the 68th Street entrance ramp to northbound US-131.

The eastbound/westbound 68th Street ramp to westbound M-6 is also closed through October 8. The detour is northbound US-131 to westbound 54th Street to southbound US-131.

I-196 BL (Business Loop)

If you’re traveling to Holland from Grand RApids, be aware that westbound I-96 BL is closed from 104th Avenue to US-31 through November 11. The westbound I-96 BL ramp to northbound and southbound US-131 is also closed through November 11.

Keep in mind that completion dates can vary based on the weather and other factors. It’s always a good idea to view the MDOT and City of Grand Rapids maps before you travel.
