Highway Lane Closures

I-196, M-11 to Market Ave

Eastbound and westbound drivers on I-196 from Market Ave to M-11 (28th St) will experience lane shifts and single-lane closures. The Chicago Dr ramp to westbound I-196 is also closed. Through October 2022.

I-96 at M-21 (Fulton St)

A traffic shift and off-peak lane closures will occur on eastbound I-96 from I-196 to Cascade Rd through August. M-21 will also be closed and detoured from East Beltline Ave to I-96. Through August 2022.

I-96 and M-6

Two miles of westbound and eastbound I-96 between Thornapple River Dr and Whitneyville Ave are being rebuilt this year. The eastbound stretch, along with on-ramps from 36th St and M-6 going east toward Lansing and Detroit will be closed through July 8, after which westbound work will begin. Completion is scheduled for November 2022.

I-96 in the City of Walker

Road and bridge improvements to 4.5 miles of I-96, from east of Bristol Ave to West River Dr, will cause intermittent lane and ramp closures and traffic shifts through September. The eastbound I-96 ramp to southbound US-131 will also be closed through mid-August. Drivers are advised to take one of the following detours:

  • Northbound US-131, West River Drive to southbound US-131
  • Eastbound I-96 to Plainfield Avenue, westbound I-96 to southbound US-131

I-196 in Ottawa County

If you’re driving to Grand Rapids from the west, roadwork in Ottawa County could impact your travel. Westbound I-196 will be shifted to the eastbound side of the roadway with traffic separated by a concrete barrier wall. In 2023, both directions of traffic will share the newly rebuilt westbound side while eastbound I-196 is reconstructed.
