Downtown is home to more than 70 shops, all within a 10-minute walk or FREE bus ride of hotels and attractions. You’ll encounter everything from clothing boutiques to gift shops to grocery markets, along with four museum stores filled with one-of-a-kind treasures. There are also 140+ restaurants and 15 parks downtown, so you’ll have ample opportunity to stop for a recharge during your retail excursion.

Bridge Street

Just steps across the Grand River from downtown, Bridge Street is the city’s hottest new entertainment district, lined with restaurants, bars and breweries. There are also a few unique stores to check out, including Bridge Street Market, the first urban grocery format from local supermarket titan Meijer (which pioneered the superstore concept in 1962). It’s a great place to find products from local specialty businesses as well as big brand names.

Convention Neighborhood

DeVos Place Convention Center is located along the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, attached by skywalk to three hotels – including the Amway Grand Plaza, which is home to four distinctive shops of its own. Convention attendees on a break will find a wealth of additional shopping choices nearby, starting with the shops of Monroe Center Street, just 200 yards away.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market

This local foods emporium houses 20+ restaurants and artisan food shops, including a bakery, butchery, cheese & charcuterie counter, craft soda maker, coffee bar, fishmonger, ice cream parlor, patisserie, spice merchant and more. Shop the GR Downtown Market for your pantry/refrigerator, then relax with a snack or meal, indoors or out. Don’t miss the open-air Christkindl Markt in November and December – this European-style Christmas village is lined with gift and artisan food vendors.

Division Avenue

Division Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids is known as the “Avenue for the Arts,” thanks to its proliferation of artist-run businesses and art spaces. It’s the perfect place to discover local artists – especially on the 3rd Thursday of every month, when 25+ downtown art spaces, shops and restaurants stay open late with discounts, art openings, live music, drink deals, and more. Division is also home to an increasing number of trendy thrift and vintage shops.

Monroe North

This neighborhood on the northern edge of downtown Grand Rapids, nestled between the slope of Belknap Hill and the banks of the Grand River, has seen historic factories transformed into high-end loft spaces, retail establishments, and dining and recreation venues.

Uptown

Consisting of four distinct, walkable business districts just a mile or so east of downtown Grand Rapids, Uptown is the city’s hippest shopping destination. Local artists and entrepreneurs offer a wide range of goods – antiques, books, candy, clothing, home décor, plants and so much more – in shops carved out of historic buildings on tree-lined streets. The annual Uptown Shop Hop during the holiday season transports shoppers between districts via trolley to knock out their shopping lists with memorable gifts.

Eastown

Eastown is an Uptown business district spanning 70 square blocks of cool, locally owned shops, restaurants, nightlife and entertainment venues. Shop for art at Gallery 154, candy at Sticky Fingers, gifts at Rebel, used records at Vinyl Alchemy, used books and comics at Argos, and metaphysical supplies at Spirit Dreams. That’s just a hint of what fresh, funky, fabulous Eastown has in store for you!

East Fulton

The Uptown business district of East Fulton is home to nearly 50 locally owned antique stores, galleries, specialty shops, salons and restaurants – and the city’s longest-running farmers market, the century-old Fulton Street Market. All the establishments are within a mile of each other on Fulton Street, the main thoroughfare out of downtown Grand Rapids.

East Hills

Known as the heart of Uptown, East Hills includes 70+ local boutiques, lively restaurants and obliging service businesses. Many of them are clustered on Cherry Street, whose red brick road, first installed in 1901, welcomes shoppers with a touch of nostalgia. East Hills is situated between East Fulton and Wealthy Street.

Wealthy Street

You’ll see distinctive “W” signs lining the 14 straight blocks of delightful shopping, dining and entertainment destinations along Wealthy Street in Uptown. There’s a little bit of everything here, including a butcher (Louise Earl), a baker (Wealthy Street Bakery) and even a candle maker (Sable Candle Co., which also lets you make your own candles). Start your Wealthy Street adventure at specialty gourmet shop Art of the Table, just a mile or so from downtown Grand Rapids.

Heritage Hill

One of the nation’s largest and best-preserved urban historic districts, Heritage Hill is known for its majestic homes dating back to the 1840s. But since it’s a residential neighborhood, it also has a few shops catering to locals and discerning visitors, including Martha’s Vineyard, a wine merchant and gourmet grocer, and Nantucket Bakery, which specializes in artisan breads and delectable pastries. You can also shop the gift store at Meyer May House, a meticulously restored 1908 Frank Lloyd Wright home.

Rockford

Quaint and walkable downtown Rockford sits along the scenic Rogue River, just 20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. It’s home to 30+ shops, ranging from fashion boutiques and candy stores to a bookshop and a toy store. They’re all locally owned and operated, and you’ll often be greeted by the owner on your visit. The shops are interspersed with 20+ local restaurants, so you can relax and recharge between store hopping.

Lowell

Historic downtown Lowell spans six walkable city blocks alongside the scenic Flat River, just 20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. A stroll down Main Street will bring you past antique stores, art galleries, fashion boutiques, a butcher, candle bar, home furnishings retailer, jewelry store, sporting goods outfitter, hardware store and more, along with some excellent restaurants boasting scenic views.

28th Street

A seven-mile stretch of 28th Street through Wyoming and Kentwood, two southern suburbs of Grand Rapids, encompasses the largest concentration of shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment options outside of the city center. The big draw is Woodland Mall, featuring 100+ mainstream and upscale stores, from JC Penny and Macy’s to Apple and Pottery Barn. But the street is also packed with big box stores, specialty stores, bookstores, boutiques and more. 

East Grand Rapids

Less than four miles from downtown Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids is an upscale suburb with a chic business district: Gaslight Village. This vibrant and walkable area of shops, restaurants, and service providers is a great place to find the latest styles, hottest trends and tastiest bites. It’s just steps away from scenic, serene John Collins Park on the edge of picturesque Reeds Lake.

Ada

Less than 15 minutes east of downtown Grand Rapids, Ada is a largely rural community with an impressive downtown. Ada Village has been transformed the past few years with renovated buildings, new construction and an influx of trendy shops and restaurants. You’ll find everything from women’s boutiques and home décor retailers to a bike shop and a horse tack store here, all steps from 20-some restaurants and a historic covered bridge.

Byron Center

Less than 20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, Byron Center is the site of Tanger Outlets, a shopping mall with 70+ designer stores offering big discounts on brand-name apparel, footwear, home décor, bath and body products, and more. Snack shops and two restaurants – 5 Lakes Brew Pub and Russo Ristorante & Mercato — provide all the fuel you need for your shopping spree.

Grandville

This southwest suburb, about 15 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, boasts a concentration of shopping destinations on 44th Street – including RiverTown Crossings Mall (with more than 110 shops and restaurants), a Cabela’s sporting goods store, numerous big box stores, and a mix of regional and national eateries. The downtown Grandville business district is just six minutes from RiverTown Crossings and is lined with locally owned shops and restaurants.
