Hearth Sauna

555 Monroe Ave. NW, 49503

Looking for an alternative to a conventional spa day? Hearth Sauna provides a relaxing, therapeutic experience at a more affordable price. It brings an ancient Nordic tradition to downtown Grand Rapids via a public sauna that uses a Finnish wood-fired stove and 450 pounds of sauna stones to heat the space to temperatures between 160˚F and 200˚F. The interior is made of western red cedar and it’s lined with benches to accommodate up to 10 people per session.

The dry heat in a Nordic sauna is more intense and invigorating than a wet sauna, and it’s reported to deliver many health benefits. Each session at Hearth Sauna is 70 minutes, but guests typically spend 5-15 minutes in the sauna and take an outdoor break to relax and rehydrate before going back in again. Clothing is required – most people wear swimsuits – and you should bring water and two towels with you. There is a changing room and you can store clothing and other items in the foyer.

You book your session online or via the Hearth Sauna app (available on Android and Apple app stores) and will be greeted by a sauna guide when you arrive. Social connection is part of Nordic sauna culture and you will be sharing the space with strangers (unless you book all 10 slots for your and your friends). It’s a great place to socialize and meet new people!

Note: Hearth Sauna is closing for the season May 5 and will reopen in a new location this September that will also feature ice baths. Follow its Facebook page for developments.

The Pink Lounge

3105 Broadmoor Ave. SE, 49512

Another non-traditional spa experience, The Pink Lounge offers dry salt therapy – aka halotherapy – using 100% authentic salts from the Himalayas and the Dead Sea.

Dry salt therapy draws on ancient beliefs in the vital properties of salt. The presence of microscopic salt particles in the air is said to help improve respiratory issues, skin conditions and a variety of other ailments. The Pink Lounge combines halotherapy with other therapeutic methods to foster rest, relaxation and self-care.

Guests can choose from Dry Salt Bed Therapy, a relaxing and meditative rest on a bed of pink Himalayan salt; Hand and Sole Detox, which employ a heated salt block to remove sweat and other impurities from the body; and the Pink Himalayan Salt Room, a man-made environment that mimics the natural salt caves of Europe.

The Pink Lounge is located just off the 28th Street commercial corridor in southeast Grand Rapids, so you can enjoy some retail therapy (and some excellent restaurants) after your salt therapy.

Grand Rapids is already one of the easiest and least stressful places to visit on the planet – and these spas will transport you to a whole other level of bliss. Enjoy!
