Roadwork Updates and Road Closures

Grand Rapids is easy to get around in-even when roadwork is in progress. Check these links to view all current area roadwork so you can avoid temporary traffic disruptions and plan a quick, convenient alternate route:

Current Projects

Road crews are winding up their work as winter approaches. It’s always a good idea to view the MDOT and City of Grand Rapids maps before you travel. 

Projects of Note

Visitors will want to pay special attention to the following projects on major thoroughfares and follow posted detours. The construction season is just starting – we’ll add new roadwork projects as soon as they’re announced.

Downtown GR

Five bridges at the I-196/US-131 interchange above downtown GR will be repaired between September 22 and late October. Lane closures will be in effect on eastbound and westbound I-196 at US-131. The westbound I-196 ramp to southbound US-131 will be closed. Eastbound I-196 will be closed at US-131 over two weekends to be announced. Downtown exit ramps from I-196 and US-131 will remain open.

Division Ave. will be closed from Fulton St. to Michigan Ave. from March-November. Access to businesses will be maintained. The major intersections on this stretch – Fulton St., Fountain St., and Lyon St. – will be closed one at a time and detour routes will be adjusted accordingly.

When the Division and Fulton intersection is closed:

  • Northbound detour will use Cherry, Ionia and Crescent.
  • Southbound detour will use Coldbrook, Monroe, Louis, Ionia and Cherry.
  • Westbound detour uses Ransom, Lyon and Ottawa.
  • Eastbound detour uses Ionia, Fountain and Ransom.

When the Division and Fulton intersection is open:

  • Northbound detour will use Fulton and Ionia.
  • Southbound detour will use Coldbrook, Monroe, Louis and Fulton.

Market Ave. between Cherry St. and Bartlett St. will be fully closed from July 7 through October 10 to support construction of the new Acrisure Amphitheater. The northbound detour is Wealthy St. to Cesar E Chavez Ave. to Cherry St. The southbound detour is Cherry St. to Cesar E. Chavez Ave. to Wealthy St. The pedestrian walkway remains on the east side of the road.

Northeast GR

Portions of Plainfield Ave. from I-96 to Airway St. will be closed from May-November. The project will be completed in phases and will include resurfacing the ramps at the I-96/Plainfield Avenue interchange.  Fuller Avenue at Plainfield is closed through mid-October and lane closures will be in effect on Plainfield at Fuller through November.

Northwest GR

The Fruit Ridge Ave. bridge over I-96 will be closed from spring through fall. Traffic will be detoured to 3 Mile and 4 Mile roads via the Walker Avenue/I-96 interchange.

Southeast GR

Short-term detours and traffic shifts due to lane and ramp closures are in effect on US-131 from 76th St. to 100th St. in Byron Center through November.  The on ramp from 76th St. to southbound US-131 is closed through early October and the off ramp from southbound US-131 to 84th St. is closed through mid-October.
