Roadwork Updates and Road Closures

Grand Rapids is easy to get around in-even when roadwork is in progress. Check these links to view all current area roadwork so you can avoid temporary traffic disruptions and plan a quick, convenient alternate route:

The 2026 road construction season in Grand Rapids has begun. Keep the following roadwork projects in mind as you make your travel plans to and around the region.

Downtown Highways

Road Closings

The eastbound I-196/southbound US-131 ramp from eastbound I-196 to southbound US-131 is closed through the beginning of October.
Detour: EB I-196 to College Ave Exit to NB College Ave to WB I-196 to SB US-131.

The eastbound I-196/northbound US-131 ramp from eastbound I-196 to northbound US-131 is closed through the end of October.

Detour: EB I-196 to NB College Ave. to WB I-196 to NB US-131.

Ramp Closings

Traveling south to north over downtown Grand Rapids:

Exit ramp from northbound US-131 to Franklin St. is closed through Nov. 13.
Entrance ramp from Franklin St. to northbound US-131 is closed through Nov. 13.
Entrance ramp from Market Ave. to southbound US-131 is closed through Sep. 14.
Entrance ramp from Market Ave. to northbound US-131 is closed through Oct. 1. Detour: NB Market Ave. to WB Pearl St.
Exit ramp from southbound US-131 to Market Ave. is closed through mid-September.
Exit ramp from southbound US-131 to Wealthy St. is closed through Oct. 1.
Entrance ramp from Market Ave. to northbound US-131 is closed through Oct 1.
Entrance ramp from Pearl St. to southbound US-131 is closed through Oct. 1.
Entrance ramp from Scribner Ave. to northbound US-131/eastbound I-196 is closed through Oct. 30.

Lane Closures

On southbound US-131:

Right lane from Pearl St. ramp to Wealthy St. ramp is closed through Oct. 1.

Right lane from eastbound I-196 to Front Ave. is closed through Oct. 1.

Downtown Surface Roads

Road Closings

Buchanan Ave. is closed from Franklin St. to Carlton St. through Nov. 26.

Martin Luther King Jr. St. is closed from US-131 to Ionia Ave through Nov. 13. Detour: Division Ave, Hall St and Century Ave.

Cherry St. from LaGrave Ave. to Lafayette Ave. is closed through Nov. 30.

Northeast

14 Mile Rd. is closed from Northland Dr. to M-57 through Oct. 9.

South

Division Ave. is closed from 100^th St. to 84^th St. through Oct. 1.

Southeast

Three miles of M-37 (Broadmoor Ave) in Caledonia are being rebuilt through mid-September 2027. M-37 will remain open but there will be ongoing lane closures, flagging and total closures at intersections. 84th Street will be closed on the east side of M-37 in coordination with a total closure of Cherry Valley Avenue from M-37 to just north of 84th Street. Plan on a little extra time when traveling from Grand Rapids to Caledonia (and vice versa) on M-37.
