The Leonard at Logan House is another historic Heritage Hill home. The 9,000 sq. ft. English Edwardian-style house was built in 1914 by Harry Carr Leonard, president of H. Leonard & Sons. The company made a fortune selling the patented “Leonard Cleanable Refrigerator,” and Harry spared no expense building this gracious mansion.  

More than 100 years later, this B&B has been named one of the Top 10 Romantic Accommodations in Michigan. Each of the home’s eight individually decorated guest rooms is outfitted with a comfortable bed, desk, flat-screen TV and antiques. A private bath is located in or near every room. Modern touches include free Wi-Fi and keyless entry.

Guests may take advantage of a beautiful outdoor garden and patio, free breakfast, free laundry and free on-street parking – which is convenient, because the excitement of downtown Grand Rapids is just a four-minute drive (or 12-minute walk) away.

The romance of the past is gorgeously recreated at Peaches B&B, an elegant Georgian-manor style home in the Heritage Hill historic district adjacent to downtown Grand Rapids. Built in 1916, the home features an intricate Flemish mosaic tile floor, leaded glass sidelights, Art Deco chandeliers, cathedral skylights and abundant antiques. Outdoors, spectacular gardens bloom with perennials, mimosa, wisteria and a weeping peach.

While the look is vintage, the amenities are strictly 21st century: all five guest bedrooms boast a private bath with giant tub, comfortable queen bed, desk and free Wi-Fi. The former ballroom is now a game and TV room where guests can play cards, shoot pool or kick back with games and DVDs. There’s even an electric vehicle charging station on site, one of many eco-friendly touches.

Peaches offers a number of packages catering to special interests and events. It is dog friendly. (Don’t worry about the elaborate metal dragon sculpture outside – it was an ArtPrize entry and it remains completely harmless.)

Built in 1860, Grandma’s House is located in Rockford, just 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids. There are four bedrooms with two shared baths, a common room for conversation and TV-watching, and a large dining room where guests can enjoy a wonderful country-style breakfast each morning. 

Can’t find a babysitter? Grandma’s House is child-friendly, with three rooms featuring both queen and twin beds so your family can be comfortable together. Even with kids in tow, you’ll enjoy the romance of days gone by, with furnishings and décor that evoke simpler times.

A short three-block walk brings you to charming downtown Rockford, which is home to 70+ unique shops and restaurants, as well as several parks and a scenic dam overlook on the Rogue River. There are also abundant recreation opportunities nearby, including the 92-mile long White Pine Trail, ideal for hikers and bikers, the mountain bike-friendly Merrell Trail and Luton Park, and four golf courses within 10 minutes.

If your idea of a romantic getaway runs more toward a secluded country setting, you’ll love the cozy 1880s farmhouse B&B at River Edge. It’s situated on 100+ acres of mature forest and tall prairie grass crisscrossed with trails and nearly one mile of private footage along the scenic Flat River. You can fish, hike, kayak, birdwatch, cross-country ski and snowshoe without ever leaving the grounds.

The entire house is available for a couple to enjoy or for 1-6 adult guests. There are three guest rooms, each with a special view of the property, all capturing a nostalgic feel resonant of the home’s original era. The living room is equipped with a fireplace and flat-screen TV for evening entertainment. The dining room features cherry wainscot paneling made from trees that grew on the property.

This B&B is just a five-minute drive from a trail head for the North Country Trail, which stretches 140 miles through West Michigan on its way across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont. Historic downtown Lowell, with its picturesque art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and riverwalk, is five minutes away. Downtown Grand Rapids is a 30-minute drive.
