Like 28th Street in southeast Grand Rapids, Alpine Avenue (aka M-37) in northwest GR is lined with a wide range of shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment options – both locally owned and nationally known. While it’s a busy throughway for much of its length, its surroundings become increasingly rural as you travel north of Grand Rapids, with the family orchards and farms of The Fruit Ridge just minutes away.

You can follow Alpine Avenue north out of downtown Grand Rapids through the city of Walker and the community of Comstock Park on its way to the rural village of Sparta – a distance of about 13 miles. The road originates just a few blocks from downtown’s Bridge Street Entertainment District, off Stocking Avenue between The Holiday Bar and Salvatore’s Restaurant & Pizza.

Follow Alpine north through a residential area about six-tenths of a mile and you’ll reach Leonard Street and the West Leonard Business District (also worth exploring). Continue north past Leonard and Alpine becomes increasingly commercialized. This stretch, which is also easily accessible from the I-96 expressway (exit 30), is where you’ll find the attractions listed below.

Alpine Avenue is vehicle-friendly with free parking everywhere. Prefer not to drive? Take a Rapid Bus – the #9 travels Alpine from downtown GR to Comstock Park and back again.
