Following the Grand River north out of downtown, the Creston neighborhood extends from Leonard Street in the south to 4 Mile Road in the north and from the Grand River (Monroe Avenue) in the west to a winding eastern edge. Originally known as the city’s Fifth Ward or North End, the area was christened Creston in 1906, giving it a distinct identity and sense of community.
Creston has seen a lot of changes over the past century, even as it has maintained its status as the city’s largest neighborhood, with a large stock of residential homes just steps from businesses and greenspaces. Entrepreneurs and investors have “rediscovered” the area of late, transforming historic buildings into showcases for new businesses to complement existing shops and restaurants. Most businesses are located along Plainfield Avenue, which cuts a diagonal swath through Creston.
Creston boasts a range of on-street parking, two city parking lots (122 Quimby St NE and 223 Spencer St NE) and numerous individual business parking lots, so it’s easy to negotiate by car. You can also take The Rapid bus #11 from downtown Grand Rapids to travel along Plainfield through Creston and beyond.
