As your Midwest wedding destination, Grand Rapids offers a diverse selection of unique spaces for rehearsal dinners – and lots of options for a fun after-party for after the rehearsal dinner has concluded.
The rehearsal dinner gives the bride and groom-to-be a chance to thank their wedding party and close family in a relaxed setting before the big day. Couples frequently use this intimate setting to present small thank-you gifts to their parents and wedding party, and attendees share stories and toasts in a more relaxed, informal manner than they would at the wedding reception.
The rehearsal dinner typically occurs the evening before the wedding, following the run-through of the wedding ceremony. If you’re planning a weekend wedding, the run-through generally takes place on day two of the four-day weekend. (See our Weddings in Grand Rapids page for a complete wedding weekend itinerary.)
Who’s invited to the rehearsal dinner? Traditionally, the immediate family and parents of the couple, the wedding party (bridesmaids, groomsmen, ring bearer, flower girl) and their spouses or dates, and the officiant and anyone else participating in the ceremony.
However, as destination wedding weekends become more popular, couples must often decide how to handle extended family members, including aunts, uncles and out-of-town guests who have traveled significant distances to attend. Inviting every out-of-town traveler to a sit-down dinner can quickly escalate the event into a second wedding reception.
To manage this gracefully, many couples opt for a tiered evening in which the wedding party attends a private, sit-down dinner before the event opens up into a broader party where all other out-of-town guests and extended family members are invited to join for drinks, desserts and casual mingling. This allows couples to show appreciation for traveling guests without absorbing the cost of a massive formal dinner.
Alternatively, rehearsal dinner participants can meet their guests at a second, close-by location – say, a bar or brewery, where, to keep your costs down, guests can be responsible for purchasing their own drinks. One of the advantages of a weekend wedding in Grand Rapids is that downtown bars and breweries are just a short, safe walk away from a wide range of rehearsal dinner options … and from the hotels where you can your guests will stay.

Downtown Rehearsal Dinner Options
With more than 170 restaurants within a 10-minute walk, downtown Grand Rapids is a fantastic choice for a rehearsal dinner – especially if downtown is also the site of your wedding hotel, welcome party, wedding ceremony, reception and/or farewell brunch.
For an exceptional upscale experience, consider Leo’s, named Michigan’s best seafood restaurant; MDRD, an award-winning contemporary Spanish restaurant on the 27th floor of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel; and Trust Restaurant, which offers an exclusive, multi-course, high-end tasting menu for “micro rehearsal dinners” of 20-25 people.
Upscale casual restaurants – blending high-quality, chef-driven food with a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere – include Butcher’s Union, a “meat-and-whiskey” restaurant, ranked No. 11 on Yelp's Top 100 U.S. Restaurants list for 2026; Linear Restaurant, an industrial-style riverside hot spot serving seasonal American cuisine; and SpeakEZ Lounge, a Prohibition-inspired eatery offering upscale pub grub (and lots of TVs for your sports-loving guests).
Fun-loving couples can inject a sense of whimsy into their rehearsal dinner at restaurants like Max’s South Seas Hideaway, serving tropical food and drinks amidst lavish tiki décor; Social Misfits, a cool place for elevated sweet and savory waffles; coffee and craft cocktails; and Stella’s Lounge, home to graffitied walls, an 80s-style arcade, award-winning stuffed burgers and 200 whiskeys.
Many of these restaurants can accommodate your other wedding guests after the rehearsal dinner, transitioning from celebratory meal to lively after-party socializing. Or the wedding party can join other guests at a nightlife venue just steps away from the rehearsal dinner. Enjoy drinks and dessert at Drip Drop Cocktail Room or Sugar Bar. Rent private karaoke rooms at K-Rok Korean Barbecue & Karaoke or sing along to dueling pianos at Mojo’s. Rent a private box and see a concert together at Acrisure Amphitheater or Van Andel Arena. Attend a comedy show at Dr. Grins Comedy Club or Midtown GR. Dance at Eve Nightclub or The BackForty Saloon. Beer City Rehearsal Dinners
Grand Rapids has held the Beer City USA title since 2012 and has been named USA Today’s Best Beer City for six years running. Many breweries serve fantastic food alongside their delicious craft libations, and are excellent places to host a quintessentially Grand Rapids rehearsal dinner.
Seven downtown breweries include three with private dining accommodations: City Built Brewing, which offers either individual off-the-menu ordering or a buffet-style spread: Founders Brewing Co., whose second-floor Centennial Room includes a fully staffed bar and two-sided patio; and New Holland Brewing - The Knickerbocker, with five separate private dining spaces including an outdoor beer garden. Once the rehearsal dinner has ended, other guests can join you in the brewery’s public space.
Outside downtown, private dining spaces are available at Rockford Brewing Company and Third Nature Brewing Company (in northeast Grand Rapids); Brick Haus Brews, The Mitten Brewing Company and Perrin Brewing Company (northwest); Harmony Brewing Company, Oakestown Brewery, Railtown Brewing Company, Thornapple Brewing Co. and Vivant Brewery + Spirits (southeast); and 5 Lakes Brewpub and Adesanya Mead & Microbrewery (southwest). Most other local breweries offer semi-private dining and/or full-restaurant buyouts.
Grand Rapids is also known as the Craft Beverage Capital of the U.S., because our “craft-pertise” extends beyond beer into cider, mead, spirits and more. You can book a private rehearsal dinner-space at Eastern Kille Distillery, Long Road Distillers and Vander Mill, maker of handcrafted hard ciders and spirits. Downtown’s Rapid River Stillhouse, a three-floor venue specializing in Southern-style cooking and whiskey, offers its second level and rooftop patio for buyout.
