Why is Grand Rapids one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest? Because it’s great place to build a career and life. LinkedIn named us the #1 U.S. City on the Rise in 2025 for our growing job market and CNN put us on its inaugural list of 10 Best American Towns to Visit. This community thrives because of the people who make visitors, newcomers and longtime residents feel welcome. And there’s space here for you to shape the next chapter of your career.
Do I need experience to get started?
Not always. Many roles across hospitality and tourism offer entry-level opportunities with on-the-job training. Employers are looking for reliability, communication skills, and a strong work ethic. If you’ve worked in customer service, retail, food service, or team environments, you likely already have transferable skills.
How much can I earn in the hospitality and tourism industry?
Earnings vary by role, experience, and pathway but the growth potential is real. Many entry-level positions start around $14–$18 per hour, while leadership and specialized roles can reach six figures. Across sectors like event planning, hotel management, food & beverage leadership, and aviation operations, advancement can significantly increase earning potential over time.
Is this a long-term career or just a starting job?
Are there jobs available right now?
Yes! In West Michigan and across the country, there are more openings than applicants in many hospitality and tourism sectors. Employers are actively hiring and expanding offering competitive pay, benefits, and advancement opportunities to attract talent.
Do I need a college degree?
Not necessarily. Many careers in these industries value experience, certifications, apprenticeships, and hands-on learning just as much as a four-year degree. Some leadership or specialized roles may benefit from additional education, but there are multiple pathways to success.
What skills are most valuable?
Communication, problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and organization are essential across all pathways. Creative thinking, technical knowledge, and leadership skills become increasingly important as you grow. If you enjoy working with people, solving challenges, and creating positive experiences, you’re already on the right track.
