The founding of medical-research facility Van Andel Institute in 1996 jump-started a multi-billion dollar investment along Michigan Street in downtown Grand Rapids. Today, this section of Michigan Street is a world-class healthcare destination known as the Medical Mile. The clinical, research and academic institutions that now line the Mile have attracted medical professionals from around the globe. Their influx has spurred new retail and residential developments that extend beyond the Mile into the city’s Midtown neighborhood.

From Michigan Street and Monroe Avenue in the heart of downtown to Michigan and Fuller Avenue, a little less than two miles away, this stretch of road runs parallel with the I-196 expressway, with nearby on and offramps making it easy to access other areas of the city.

The Medical Mile is also a half mile south of the historic Belknap neighborhood, which features a blend of new and mature housing stock along with some excellent recreational opportunities.

To explore the Medical Mile by bus, take The Rapid #13 route, which runs from downtown to Fuller Avenue before heading north to Riverside Park.
